Written step-by-step activities from the Laughter Percussion Academy approach. These are instructions to read, not audio. Recorded sessions appear above once Professor Idi Ras Banamungu uploads them.
Text guide · Community participation · 5 minShakalaka-Doo welcome circle
- Sit or stand in a circle and pat a slow, steady beat on your knees.
- Leader calls “Shakalaka!” — everyone answers “Doo!”
- Repeat four times, getting a little louder each round.
- Finish with one big shared laugh and a clap.
Accessibility: Works seated. Clap, tap a table or simply nod along. Anyone may answer quietly or just listen.
Text guide · Joy · 4 minLaughter Shake
- Hold a shaker, a rice-filled bottle, or just shake your hands.
- Shake gently for 8 counts while saying “ha”.
- Shake bigger for 8 counts with “ha-ha”.
- Freeze, take a breath, then shake and laugh freely for 8 counts.
Accessibility: Shake only what is comfortable — fingers, wrists or shoulders. Stop any time.
Text guide · Celebration · 6 minLaughter Cocktail
- Keep a light beat with feet or hands.
- Mix in a “giggle” laugh for 4 beats.
- Add a “belly” laugh for 4 beats.
- Add a “silent” laugh (open-mouthed, no sound) for 4 beats.
- Combine all three together for the final round.
Accessibility: Silent laughter is a full option for people who prefer quiet. Laughing is invited, never required.
Text guide · Relaxation · 5 minMindful rhythm breathing
- Tap a slow beat — about one tap per second.
- Breathe in for 4 taps, out for 4 taps.
- Lengthen the out-breath to 6 taps if comfortable.
- Let the taps get softer until they stop, and rest in the quiet.
Accessibility: Breathe naturally if counting is uncomfortable. Can be done lying down.
Text guide · Resilience · 5 minStrong-beat resilience round
- Choose a short phrase together, e.g. “I can, we can”.
- Say it on a strong, steady beat four times.
- Pass the phrase around the group, one voice at a time.
- End together on the strongest beat with a laugh.
Accessibility: Participants can pass, tap instead of speak, or use a sign or gesture.
Text guide · Connection · 4 minEcho-and-connect rhythm
- Leader plays a short 4-beat pattern.
- Group echoes it back.
- Take turns being the leader.
- Finish by everyone playing their own pattern at once, then laughing together.
Accessibility: Patterns can be clapped, tapped, stomped, or shown visually with hand movements.
Text guide · Accessible rhythm · 6 minSeated rhythm and movement
- Sit comfortably with feet supported.
- Tap knees for 8 beats, then shoulders for 8.
- Sway side to side for 8 beats.
- Add a “ha!” on every fourth beat.
Accessibility: Designed for seated participation. Use any movement that feels safe; skip any that do not.
